Deborah Ellis

Deborah Ellis works as a mental health residential counsellor in Toronto, Canada. Her first novel, published in Canada, was called “ Looking for X” and won the Governor General’s Award.

She grew up in Paris, Ontario, and has been a political activist since she was 17, advocating non- violence. She became involved in the Peace Movement and the Women’s Movement and has spent a great deal of time in Afghan refugee camps in Pakistan, talking to women and writing down their experiences of 20 years of war.

The Breadwinner is a topical novel, based on the recent troubles in Afghanistan under the Taliban rule and is Deborah’s first book to be published in the UK.
